Definition

The total market value of a company's outstanding shares, calculated by multiplying the current share price by the total number of shares. SEBI classifies companies as large-cap (top 100), mid-cap (101-250), and small-cap (251 and below) based on market capitalisation.

Example

If a company has 10 crore shares outstanding and each share is priced at Rs 500, its market cap is Rs 5,000 crore, placing it in the mid-cap category.
