Lock-inPeriod

Mutual Funds

Definition

A mandatory period during which an investor cannot redeem or sell their investment. Different products have different lock-in periods: ELSS has 3 years, NPS has until age 60 (partial withdrawal allowed), and close-ended funds have a specified tenure. Lock-in protects the fund from redemption pressure and encourages long-term investing.

Example

If you invest in an ELSS fund on January 1, 2026, you cannot redeem those units until January 1, 2029 (3-year lock-in).
