Beta

Markets

Definition

A measure of a fund's volatility relative to its benchmark. A beta of 1 means the fund moves in line with the benchmark. A beta greater than 1 indicates higher volatility, while a beta less than 1 indicates lower volatility.

Example

A fund with a beta of 1.2 is expected to move 20% more than its benchmark — if the market rises 10%, the fund may rise approximately 12%.
