ELSS(EquityLinkedSavingsScheme)
Definition
A category of equity mutual fund that qualifies for tax deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, up to Rs 1.5 lakh per financial year. ELSS has a mandatory 3-year lock-in period — the shortest among Section 80C instruments. Being equity-oriented, ELSS carries market risk.
Example
Investing Rs 1.5 lakh in ELSS can save up to Rs 46,800 in taxes (at the 30% + cess tax bracket) while potentially generating equity-linked returns.
